Small Landscapes with Big Attitudes

Our Annual Meeting was held at the Rutland Country Club and included lunch and a guest speaker, Kerry Ann Mendez. We voted in a new group of officers in a ceremony led by a past President of the Rutland Garden Club and current leader of the Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont. Topics at the meeting included the Bake Sale and Plant Sale, the Strawberry Luncheon, Book Memorial, Scholarship Fund, Bylaw Changes, and the Treasurers Report. After the meeting Kerry gave an informative and enthusiastic talk on "Small Landscapes with Big Attitudes" that featured her beautiful gardens at both Saratoga Springs and Kennebunk. Her handout will now be a treasured resource as it detailed plants that shone in all seasons, skinny plants for narrow spaces and maximizing beauty from ornamental grasses (just a few examples).

One of our members set up a table with baked goods she had made with beautiful packaging. She donated many items for us to use, such as ribbons, bags and decorations, on our own baked goods for the Sale coming up Saturday, May 20th. Members have been digging up perennials from their gardens over the past weeks for sale at our Plant Sale the same day. This annual event is much anticipated in Rutland every spring! It will begin at 9 AM at the Maynard Insurance Agency, 105 Center St. in Rutland. This year the proceeds are dedicated to our new Rutland Garden Club Scholarship. The scholarship was established to encourage the pursuit of a career in fields related to our natural environment.
